Houston Audubon’s Sanctuary Expansions
Houston Audubon has been at the forefront of habitat preservation. In January 2026, they completed the “Save Bolivar” campaign, securing the final parcel to fully protect the 1,301-acre Bolivar Flats Shorebird Sanctuary. This area serves as a crucial habitat for migratory shorebirds along the Upper Texas Coast. Additionally, in February 2026, Houston Audubon established the 128-acre Peach Creek Woods Nature Sanctuary in Montgomery County, safeguarding mixed pine and hardwood forests along Peach Creek, a vital component of the San Jacinto River watershed.
City Ordinances and Regional Conservation Plans
In October 2022, Houston’s City Council approved an ordinance protecting 7,423 acres of natural habitats within city parks, marking a significant step in land preservation.
